1.Pre-Lunar New Year Shipping Rates Decline as SCFI Drops 4.4%
Despite a modest increase in cargo volumes ahead of the Lunar New Year, freight rates across major long-haul shipping routes continued to decline. On January 16, the Shanghai Containerized Freight Index (SCFI) stood at 1,574.12 points, down 4.4% week-on-week.
Rates to Europe’s main ports fell 2.5% to USD 1,676 per TEU, while Mediterranean routes saw a sharper decline of 7.7%, dropping to USD 2,983 per TEU. Trans-Pacific routes showed mixed performance: U.S. West Coast rates fell 1.1% to USD 2,194 per FEU, while U.S. East Coast rates edged up 1.2% to USD 3,165 per FEU.
Freight rates on Persian Gulf routes dropped sharply by 14.5% amid geopolitical tensions. Australia–New Zealand routes declined 10.1%, while South America routes slipped 1.1%. Shipping lines are broadly adopting aggressive price-cutting strategies to secure cargo, with capacity utilization on some routes remaining above 90%, though overall downward pressure on rates persists.
2.Zhuhai Launches Its First Scheduled Cross-Border E-Commerce Cargo Route
A Boeing 738 freighter carrying 18.5 tons of cross-border e-commerce goods recently departed Zhuhai Airport for Clark, Philippines, marking the official launch of the Zhuhai–Clark scheduled cargo route.
Operated by JD Airlines, the route is scheduled for six flights per week. It represents the second regular international cargo route since Zhuhai Airport’s international freight port became operational and is the first route dedicated specifically to cross-border e-commerce. The service is designed to provide efficient and stable air logistics support for platforms such as SHEIN and Pinduoduo.
3.Online Shopping Traffic in Samara Region Rises 21% in January, with Men as the Core Audience
In January 2026, online shopping activity among residents of Russia’s Samara Region increased significantly, with e-commerce platform traffic rising 21% year-on-year. Traffic peaked on January 13, while January 1 recorded the lowest volume due to holiday-related downtime.
Consumers aged 35–44 accounted for 34% of total traffic, making them the largest demographic group. Male users generated 41% more browsing traffic than female users. Local telecom operator MegaFon reported network upgrades, including expanded LTE capacity and additional indoor base stations, to ensure smooth online shopping experiences.
4.Pakistan Imposes Additional Tariffs on Multiple Chinese Products
Pakistan’s National Tariff Commission announced a 29.02% anti-dumping duty on coated white-backed duplex board imported from or originating in China. The product—classified as double-coated bleached paperboard—is widely used in packaging for cigarettes, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and industrial goods.
The affected products require one coated side exceeding 20 g/m² for enhanced printability, while the reverse side contains less than 20 g/m² coating. Relevant HS codes include 4810.9200 and 4810.9900. The tariff takes effect immediately upon announcement and will remain valid until February 27, 2027.
